GLASGOW, Scotland — Rangers Football Club has announced the dismissal of Philippe Clement from his position as manager after a tenure that lasted 16 months. His termination follows a series of disappointing performances, including two consecutive home losses that have significantly impacted the team’s morale and standings.

Clement has faced mounting criticism ever since a shocking defeat in the Scottish Cup against the lower-tier team Queen’s Park over two weeks ago. A further defeat at home against St. Mirren on Saturday, marking the first loss to them at Ibrox since 1991, ultimately led the club’s board to make their decision.

The 50-year-old leaves Rangers with the team currently trailing rivals Celtic by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership standings. In a statement released on Sunday evening, the club confirmed Clement’s departure, thanking him for his commitment and efforts during his time in charge.

“Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement. The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge,” the statement read. They also indicated that further information would be provided in the near future.

Clement took over the managerial role from Michael Beale in October 2022 and achieved success relatively quickly, securing the Scottish League Cup just two months into his leadership. However, despite reaching the last 16 of the Europa League this season, where they are set to play against Fenerbahce next month, it appears Rangers will finish the season without capturing any domestic silverware.
