BOSTON — The New York Knicks made significant roster changes in the offseason to elevate their competitiveness against the top teams in the Eastern Conference. However, despite their efforts, they find themselves struggling to enter that elite tier after their recent performances, including a tough 118-105 defeat against the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics.
“We’re not focused on trying to close the gap with the Boston Celtics,” remarked Knicks guard Josh Hart. “They are the champions for a reason with a roster full of All-NBA and All-Star talents. Our priority is to ensure we are in a strong position when the season concludes, and at this moment, we’re not there yet.” Following a disappointing loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where they were down by 37 points, the Knicks appeared to be searching for answers.
In the game against Boston, the Knicks fell behind significantly, trailing by 27 points in the third quarter. Although they attempted a comeback, their efforts fell short in the final quarter. “We all need to elevate our game,” Hart emphasized. “It’s crucial for us to begin our development. The possibility of facing Boston in the playoffs is there, and improving is essential.”
The Knicks, who reshaped their squad by bringing in Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges over the summer, were expected to pose a serious threat to the Celtics this season. Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged the challenges they face in closing the competitive gap, commenting, “It’s an ongoing journey. The Celtics operate as a well-oiled machine after being together for an extended time. We must focus on learning and improvement.”
Currently sitting third in the Eastern Conference, right behind the Celtics and Cavaliers, the Knicks are looking to bounce back following these two defeats. Their defense has struggled, particularly against high-powered offenses.
Thibodeau addressed the issues surrounding the defense, stating, “It’s likely a mix of factors. The Celtics are elite, and their prolific three-point shooting can quickly turn a game. A few minutes of missteps can result in a significant run against us.” He emphasized the necessity for consistent improvement on defense to compete effectively.
Towns echoed the sentiment that close games against top teams are not enough to satisfy their aspirations. “We are indeed a work in progress,” he said after the recent games. “We will continue to develop throughout the season until we reach the postseason.”
In their first two matchups of the season, the Celtics dominated the Knicks, winning by margins of 23 and 27 points.
