EL PASO, Texas — In an exciting matchup on Thursday night, UTEP triumphed over Florida International with a score of 77-63, thanks in part to Kevin Kalu’s impressive performance, where he netted 14 points.
Kalu demonstrated exceptional accuracy, making 6 out of 7 attempts from the field, along with 2 out of 5 from the free-throw line. His contributions were key for the Miners, who improved their record to 17-7 overall and 7-4 in Conference USA. Devon Barnes also made a significant impact, finishing the game with 13 points on 5 for 10 shooting, including 3 for 7 from three-point territory. Barnes complemented his scoring with six assists and three steals. Otis Frazier III added another layer to the team’s efforts, contributing 12 points, which included a 5 for 6 showing at the free-throw line along with 12 rebounds and five assists.
For the Panthers, who now hold a record of 8-17 and 2-10 in the conference, Vianney Salatchoum was the standout player, scoring 12 points while also securing nine rebounds, making three steals, and recording four blocks. Ashton Williamson matched Salatchoum’s point total, adding four assists to his performance. Additionally, Jayden Brewer chipped in with 11 points, rounding out the offensive output for Florida International.
The first half was tightly contested, with UTEP and Florida International heading into halftime tied at 37-37. The Miners seized control midway through the second half and held onto their lead, with Kalu playing a crucial role in helping UTEP extend their advantage, scoring nine points after the break.
Looking ahead, both teams are set to compete again on Saturday. UTEP will welcome Liberty for their next contest, while Florida International will hit the road to face New Mexico State.
