MEXICO CITY — The prospect of adding more trophies to his collection and participating in the next FIFA Club World Cup has inspired Spanish defender Sergio Ramos to join Liga MX’s Monterrey on a one-year contract.

At nearly 39 years old, Ramos was officially introduced by the club during a press conference on Sunday.

“I’m not finished winning, and I’m not here to dwell on what I’ve achieved,” stated Ramos. “This is my first visit to Mexico, and I aim to create a legacy here. My focus is not on tourism; I’m here to win new titles.”

Monterrey, commonly referred to as Rayados, is one of the most financially robust teams in Mexico.

The club is one of three Mexican teams slated to compete in the expanded Club World Cup, which will take place in the United States next summer. The other two teams participating are León and Pachuca.

In addition to local league play, Monterrey will also be competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Ramos expressed optimism about the team’s potential, saying, “This club has significant growth opportunities, and they will be involved in both local and international contests. It’s an ideal moment to stand out.”

He remarked that making the decision to join Monterrey was straightforward.

A proven victor, Ramos was part of Spain’s squad that lifted the World Cup in 2010. Since May of the previous year, he hasn’t participated in any official matches, having last played for Sevilla in the Spanish league.

Despite the time away from the field, Ramos is not daunted by coming back into competitive play.

“In soccer, age is irrelevant; what counts is performance,” he noted. “Choosing to return here after a long career reflects my desire to continue winning.”

Ramos has not only lifted the World Cup but has also claimed the Euro 2012 championship with Spain, along with five Spanish league titles and four Champions League trophies during his tenure of 16 seasons with Real Madrid.
