Skiers in New Hampshire evacuated from lift using ropes due to equipment failure

FRANCONIA, N.H. — A recent mechanical issue led to the successful evacuation of over 60 individuals from a ski lift in New Hampshire. This incident occurred just days after a similar mishap at another ski destination, where a chair detached and plummeted.

On Wednesday, a total of 64 passengers on the Peabody Express Quad at Cannon Mountain were lowered safely by rope over approximately two hours. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from this incident. The ski area is owned by the state and is located in Franconia Notch State Park. State officials indicated in a press statement that a faulty bolt was the cause of the mechanical failure.

Following the incident, the lift was shut down for thorough inspection. As of Thursday, the lift remained out of service due to strong winds, which not only hindered access to the summit but also restricted the operation of other lifts in the area.

This incident comes on the heels of a situation at Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett, New Hampshire, where a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries on Sunday when the chair he was occupying fell approximately 20 feet to the ground. Initial investigations suggest a mechanical failure led to the chair’s dislodgment, and that lift is also temporarily closed.

The New Hampshire fire marshal’s office mentioned in a release that both lifts underwent state inspections within the past year, in accordance with the New Hampshire Code of Administrative Rules. In a separate case last December, over 170 skiers and snowboarders had to be evacuated from a Colorado ski lift at Winter Park Resort due to a crack that was discovered. That operation took about five hours to safely lower individuals utilizing ropes.
