BARTLETT, N.H. — A skier experienced a harrowing incident when he fell approximately 20 feet (6 meters) to the ground after his chair lift detached. Fortunately, his injuries are not life-threatening, according to officials in New Hampshire.

Witnesses reported that the individual remained conscious following the fall, which occurred around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday at the Attitash Mountain Resort, as stated by the state fire marshal’s office in a recent announcement. The injured skier was promptly transported to a hospital for medical care.

Initial investigations indicate that a mechanical issue was responsible for the chair’s dislodgment from the cable. The fire marshal’s office confirmed that no additional injuries occurred, and other passengers present on the lift were safely unloaded at the top without incident.

The Flying Bear lift has been temporarily closed while both the fire marshal’s office and the Passenger Tramway Safety Board conduct their ongoing investigation into the matter.

A representative from Vail Resorts, the Colorado-based company that operates Attitash, assured that the resort conducts daily inspections of its lifts to ensure safety and operational integrity.

Skier David Gunzburger expressed his shock about the incident, describing it as frightening and a “nightmare.” He recalled witnessing ski patrol personnel assisting the injured man, stating, “He was backboarded, neck brace on,” while being pulled on a sled.
