FORT WORTH, Texas — Sedona Prince displayed an impressive performance, scoring 24 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, leading ninth-ranked TCU to a commanding 80-75 victory over instate rival No. 25 Baylor. This win not only ended a staggering 35-year losing streak against Baylor but also propelled TCU to the top of the Big 12 standings.
The Horned Frogs, now boasting a record of 20-2 and 8-1 in the Big 12, have been competing in the conference alongside Baylor since the 2012-13 season. Prior to this much-anticipated matchup, TCU endured 37 straight losses to Baylor, with their last triumph dating back to February 28, 1990, during their days in the Southwest Conference.
For Baylor, Sarah Andrews contributed significantly, netting 21 points, including five three-pointers. The Bears, currently at 16-5 and 6-2 in the conference, have a storied history that includes three national championships and 13 Big 12 regular-season titles, along with 22 trips to the NCAA Tournaments since their last defeat to TCU.
Madison Conner also shone for the Frogs, matching Andrews’ points with 21, aided by four three-pointers. TCU’s lead ballooned to as much as 22 points in the third quarter, showcasing a commanding lead throughout the game. Additional contributions came from Hailey Van Lith, who scored 19 points, and Agnes Emma-Nnopu, who added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Baylor’s effort saw Aliyah Matharu score 14 points and Jada Walker contribute 11. Despite a season-low of only four turnovers, Baylor struggled with their shooting, managing just 36.8% from the field (28 of 76 shots), while getting outmatched on the boards by TCU, which recorded 45 rebounds to Baylor’s 34.
Key takeaways indicate a tough return to the Top 25 for Baylor, which had faced top-ranked UCLA earlier in the season, suffering a 72-57 loss. In a surprising turn, TCU, despite committing six turnovers in the first five minutes, jumped to an early 12-2 lead. The Frogs made an immediate impact, scoring the first nine points of the game mainly with Conner’s combination of three free throws and a three-pointer.
Significantly, TCU has now achieved victory in their last 18 home contests, including a perfect 15-0 record for this season, marking the longest winning streak at home in a single season for the program.
Looking ahead, Baylor is scheduled to face UCF on Wednesday night, while TCU will head to Iowa State next Sunday.
