MINNEAPOLIS — Grace Grocholski led the Golden Gophers with 17 points, while Mallory Heyer recorded a double-double. With a commanding second half, No. 23 Minnesota defeated Wisconsin 71-50, marking the Badgers’ eighth consecutive loss.
Grocholski was efficient, hitting 5 of 8 attempts which included four 3-pointers, and she converted 3 of 4 free throw opportunities. Heyer contributed significantly with 15 points and 11 rebounds, notching her second double-double of the season. In addition, Sophie Hart matched her season high by scoring 16 points and adding four assists, while Tori McKinney chipped in 14 points and registered three steals.
For Wisconsin, Serah Williams was the standout, scoring 16 points and pulling down six rebounds. However, she also accounted for eight of her team’s 23 turnovers during the game.
The first quarter ended in a 14-14 tie, and the teams were even at 28 by halftime. Grocholski was pivotal for Minnesota at this stage, scoring half of their points. Williams led Wisconsin at the half with 12 points. While Grocholski shot 4 of 6 in the first half, the rest of her teammates struggled, hitting only 5 of 27. Minnesota also had difficulty from beyond the arc, making just 3 of 20 attempts. The Badgers managed a shooting percentage of 50% but attempted nine fewer shots. Minnesota capitalized on Wisconsin’s 11 turnovers, scoring 10 points off those mistakes.
The second half saw a shift as Hart opened the scoring with four free throws in the first two minutes, establishing a lead for Minnesota. Heyer followed up with back-to-back baskets, and Grocholski added a 3-pointer, propelling the Gophers ahead with a 15-2 scoring run that extended their lead to 43-30. In the end, Minnesota outscored Wisconsin 45-22 in the second half, securing a strong victory.
Looking ahead, Wisconsin is set to host No. 23 Michigan on Wednesday, while Minnesota will visit No. 4 Southern California on Thursday.
