CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In an exhilarating contest, RJ Davis scored seven points during the overtime period, and Seth Trimble nailed a crucial jumper, leading North Carolina to a thrilling 102-96 win against Boston College on Saturday.
Davis made a pivotal 3-pointer with just under three minutes left in the extra period to put the Tar Heels ahead 94-91. After Boston College equalized with their own 3-pointer, Davis responded with two successful free throws to regain a slender two-point advantage. Following another tie from BC, Trimble’s jump shot edged UNC ahead 98-96 with 1:42 left on the clock. Boston College was unable to find the basket again in the closing moments, and Davis added two more free throws with 53 seconds remaining. The victory was sealed by a dunk from Ven-Allen Lubin with just 28 seconds to spare.
The game was tightly contested throughout regulation, with Trimble scoring the final four points, including two free throws with 18 seconds left and a jumper with five seconds to go. A strategic foul from the Tar Heels allowed them to reset the defense with three seconds remaining, which resulted in a crucial turnover that sent the game into overtime.
For North Carolina, Davis concluded the match with 22 points. Other notable contributors included Ian Jackson with 19 points, while both Trimble and Jalen Washington added 18 points each. Elliot Cadeau finished with 13 points, and Trimble also recorded an impressive 12 rebounds, marking his second double-double of the season. The Tar Heels improved their record to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in the ACC after facing two consecutive one-point losses.
Boston College’s effort was spearheaded by Donald Hand Jr., who led his team with 26 points. Dion Brown and Chad Venning also performed admirably, scoring 20 and 17 points, respectively, while Joshua Beadle chipped in with 14 points. The Eagles now hold a record of 9-11 and 1-8 in the conference.
North Carolina managed an 8-0 scoring run late in the first half, which allowed them to enter halftime with a slim 46-45 lead.
The second half saw a total of ten ties and five lead changes, but North Carolina was unable to take control in the final five and a half minutes of regular time.
In the upcoming week, the Tar Heels will hit the road for two games, facing Pittsburgh on Tuesday and then traveling to meet No. 2 Duke on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Boston College is set to host Florida State on Saturday.
