Igor Shesterkin stops 35 shots as the rising Rangers dominate Flyers 6-1

NEW YORK — The New York Rangers delivered a dominant performance against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night, winning decisively with a score of 6-1. Defenseman K’Andre Miller contributed significantly to the victory, recording both a goal and an assist, while goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 35 crucial saves to secure the win. This success comes as the Rangers have been on a tear, boasting a record of 8-1-3 since January 2, following a less successful December where they only managed to clinch three victories.

The Flyers, on the other hand, saw their three-game winning streak come to an end despite a goal from Owen Tippett, who recorded his 14th of the season early in the first period. Tippett’s goal came just a minute and 25 seconds into the game, but the Rangers quickly responded. Braden Schneider netted his third goal of the season at the nine-minute mark, leveling the game. Not long after, Adam Edstrom pushed the Rangers ahead with his fifth goal of the campaign at the 10:24 mark, giving New York a 2-1 advantage.

The second period featured Miller extending the Rangers’ lead with his third goal of the season, which was a notable achievement as it marked his first goal since December 8. His goal was assisted by defenseman Will Borgen and Artemi Panarin, who continues to lead the team with 50 points, including 20 goals. In the third period, Filip Chytil further widened the scoring gap, making it 4-1 early on.

Late in the game, Adam Fox scored a short-handed empty-netter, while Reilly Smith capped off the scoring with a power-play goal. Philadelphia’s Samuel Ersson tallied 31 saves but couldn’t keep the team in the contest. The Flyers had previously entered the game having won five of their last six matchups, giving them a 12-11-4 record against Eastern Conference teams this season, with a 5-6-1 record against the Metropolitan Division.

One of the key moments of the game emerged when Edstrom scored to put the Rangers ahead permanently. The young Swedish forward has been on a roll recently, accumulating three goals in his last seven appearances while forming a productive line with Matt Rempe and Sam Carrick. In an impressive display, all six Rangers defensemen — Miller, Schneider, Borgen, Urho Vaakanainen, Fox, and Ryan Lindgren — managed to record points in the rout.

Looking ahead, the Rangers will host the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, while the Flyers are set to face off against the New York Islanders in their next outing on Friday night.
