MONTREAL — On Saturday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs made an impressive comeback, scoring seven consecutive goals to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 7-3, after initially trailing by three goals in the first period.
Toronto’s offensive power was showcased through contributions from Bobby McMann, Nicholas Robertson, William Nylander, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Steven Lorentz, Auston Matthews, and David Kampf, while goaltender Joseph Woll delivered a solid performance with 32 saves.
The Canadiens got off to a strong start with Kirby Dach scoring at just 5:08 into the game. Patrik Laine followed up with a power-play goal, and Josh Anderson added another just nine seconds later, quickly putting Montreal ahead 3-0.
As the game progressed, the Maple Leafs began to chip away at the deficit. McMann and Robertson scored during the second period, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Nylander tied the game early in the third, finding the net just 24 seconds in during a breakaway.
Continuing their momentum, Ekman-Larsson netted a power-play goal at 4:31, with Matthews scoring a short-handed goal shortly thereafter at 7:58. Lorentz extended the lead at 14:45, followed by Kampf’s short-handed empty-netter at 18:26, completing a remarkable turnaround for Toronto.
Takeaways from the game noted that the Canadiens missed several key chances, which contributed to their difficulties. Shots that struck the post, coupled with missed opportunities and Woll’s impressive saves, prevented Montreal from capitalizing further in the second period.
On the other side, despite a rough start, the Maple Leafs quickly regrouped and took control of the game, scoring five goals before Montreal had a chance to recover.
One significant moment came halfway through the second period when Christian Dvorak of Montreal fired a shot that hit the right post. This misfortune quickly transitioned into a two-on-one rush for Toronto, leading to McMann’s goal just eight seconds later.
Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs are set to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at home on Monday night, while the Canadiens will host the New York Rangers on Sunday night.
