TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Lightning put on an impressive performance as they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 on Saturday night, powered by Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel, who each contributed a goal along with two assists.
Darren Raddysh also had a notable impact with one goal and an assist, leading Tampa Bay to its third victory in four games. Brayden Point and Mitchell Chaffee rounded out the scoring, while goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was solid, making 39 saves throughout the match.
The Red Wings managed to get a score from Lucas Raymond, but it wasn’t enough to keep them competitive. Cam Talbot started in goal but struggled, allowing five goals on just 16 shots before being replaced by Alex Lyon, who finished the game with six saves.
Tampa Bay took control of the game early in the second period. They erupted for three goals in just 3 minutes and 52 seconds, with Guentzel, Kucherov, and Chaffee all finding the net in that short span.
Takeaways from the game include the fact that the Red Wings suffered their third loss in the last 11 games since Todd McClellan took over as coach on December 26. Meanwhile, the Lightning’s scoring prowess was on display, as they achieved four goals in the second period. This marks the 17th occasion this season where they have scored at least three goals in a single period, tying them with Washington for the highest tally in the league.
One of the highlight moments came from Kucherov, who dazzled the audience early in the second period. He skillfully maneuvered around Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat before unleashing a wrist shot past Talbot just 1:50 into the period, extending Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-0.
In terms of milestones, Kucherov achieved his 600th career assist during this game, which came just one game after teammate Victor Hedman also reached the 600-assist mark.
Looking ahead, the Red Wings are set to face the Dallas Stars on Sunday, while the Lightning will head out to Toronto for a game on Monday.
