SUNRISE, Fla. — In an impressive performance, Spencer Knight recorded 34 saves, ensuring his second shutout of the season as the Florida Panthers secured a 3-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday evening. This matchup was the first in a home-and-home series between the two teams.
Jesper Boqvist was the standout player, netting his 11th goal of the season midway through the second period, which marked a personal best for him. Anton Lundell extended the lead with a goal in the third period, while Gustav Forsling capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal.
The Ducks continued their struggles, suffering their third consecutive loss and finishing their six-game road trip with a disappointing record of 1-4-1. Anaheim’s goaltender, John Gibson, was busy between the pipes, turning away 42 shots from the Panthers.
Florida’s leading scorer, Sam Reinhart, encountered trouble early in the game. He received a game misconduct after delivering a kneeing major on Isac Lundestrom in the first period, forcing Lundestrom to leave the ice assisted and head to the locker room.
Highlights from the game included the Ducks’ ongoing difficulties in scoring, as they entered the match averaging the lowest in the NHL with just 2.42 goals per game. During their trip, the Ducks faced the unfortunate circumstance of being shut out three times.
For Spencer Knight, this marked just the fifth shutout of his young career. His previous shutout occurred on November 30, against the Carolina Hurricanes, when he led his team to a dominant 6-0 win. Knight had played in relief in the recent loss to Detroit after Sergei Bobrovsky was pulled from that game.
In terms of special teams play, both teams struggled significantly on the power play, each failing to convert on two opportunities.
The two teams will clash once more on Tuesday night in Anaheim, as they continue their season series.
