Starling nets 21 as Syracuse stages late comeback to defeat Notre Dame 77-69

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — In an exciting matchup, J.J. Starling led the way for Syracuse with 21 points, while Eddie Lampkin Jr. recorded a double-double as the Orange came from behind to defeat Notre Dame 77-69 on Saturday.

Syracuse initial struggled, facing a double-digit deficit in the first half, but Lampkin’s pivotal jumper gave them their first lead of the game at 67-65 with just over four minutes left on the clock. Starling followed with a crucial layup, extending their lead to 69-65.

In a tense finish, Notre Dame’s Matt Allocco managed to score a layup, closing the gap to 69-67 with just over a minute remaining. However, Syracuse surged ahead for the win, propelled by Starling’s five late points and Kyle Cuffe Jr.’s perfect performance from the free-throw line, where he made all six attempts during a decisive 14-4 run.

Starling’s strong performance featured three 3-pointers and a shooting percentage of 35% overall (7-of-20). Lampkin finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, marking his fourth consecutive double-double. Cuffe also contributed 13 points to the victory for Syracuse, improving their record to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. The Orange have now secured four consecutive victories at home against Notre Dame.

Markus Burton gave a standout performance for the Fighting Irish, scoring 22 of his 28 points and helping Notre Dame to a 42-33 lead at halftime. The Irish started strong, netting the first 11 points of the game and holding a commanding 17-point advantage at 38-21 with about five minutes left in the first half.

Braeden Shrewsberry added 14 points for Notre Dame, while Allocco and Tae Davis each contributed 11 points. The Fighting Irish now hold an overall record of 8-10 and 2-5 in conference play.

Syracuse will be looking to continue their momentum when they face Clemson on Wednesday, while Notre Dame prepares for a road game against Virginia next Saturday.
