MORONI, Comoros — Recent election results indicate that the ruling party in Comoros has successfully secured 28 of the 33 available seats in Parliament. This announcement, delivered on Tuesday, confirms that the Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros (CRC), led by President Azali Assoumani, has maintained its majority within the Indian Ocean nation.
These results, which were disclosed by the electoral commission, are subject to verification by the Supreme Court before being finalized. The elections, held on Sunday, were notably boycotted by several opposition parties, who have expressed concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process, previously alleging instances of fraud involving the ruling CRC.
The Comoros, an archipelago situated near the eastern coast of Africa, close to Madagascar, has grappled with political instability marked by numerous military coups since it gained independence from France in 1975. President Assoumani, a former military leader, first came to power in 1999 after ousting the sitting president.
At 66 years old, Assoumani initially left the presidency in 2006 after completing one term but made a political comeback by clinching another electoral victory in 2016. He has since held the presidency through three consecutive elections. In 2018, he implemented constitutional amendments that enabled him to bypass established term limits and contravene a prior political agreement designed to ensure a rotation of leadership among the islands within the Comoros.
