ROME — Lazio has made the decision to terminate the employment of Juan Bernabé, the individual responsible for managing the Italian soccer club’s eagle mascot, following his controversial online activity that included posting explicit images of his prosthetic penis.

Bernabé, who is a falconer, shared these images on his private social media accounts after having a penile implant procedure, which he claimed was not for medical reasons.

In addition to sharing visuals, Bernabé appeared on a provocative Italian radio program, La Zanzara, where he discussed his motivations for undergoing the surgery.

He expressed feelings of pride and a heightened sense of masculinity being associated with Lazio. However, the club evidently held a different perspective, as they moved swiftly to terminate Bernabé’s contract.

A statement from Lazio expressed their dismay over Bernabé’s actions, saying, “Shocked to see the photographic images and video of Mr. Juan Bernabè and to read the statements that accompanied them, Lazio announces that it has stopped, with immediate effect, all relationship with this person, given the seriousness of his behavior.”

The club acknowledged the disappointment fans may face with the absence of the eagle during upcoming home games but emphasized that they could not continue their association with someone whose actions rendered that relationship untenable.

The eagle, which carries significance as a symbol of ancient Rome, typically soars above the Stadio Olimpico before each home match.

Bernabé, for his part, stated that he does not regret sharing the content he posted online.

This is not Bernabé’s first brush with controversy; in 2021, he was suspended by Lazio after being recorded giving a fascist salute and chanting “Duce, Duce,” a term historically used to venerate Benito Mussolini, Italy’s former fascist leader.

“I admire him so much,” Bernabé remarked in his recent radio interview while reflecting on Mussolini.
