In Arlington, Texas, relief pitcher Chris Martin has signed a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers, which guarantees him a total of $5.5 million. Moreover, the contract includes the potential for him to earn an additional $500,000 through performance-based bonuses.
As part of this deal, Martin will receive a $1 million signing bonus and an annual salary of $4.5 million. He has the opportunity to earn extra bonuses of $150,000 for pitching 45 and 50 innings, plus an additional $200,000 if he reaches 55 innings on the mound.
Last season, Martin had an impressive performance for the Boston Red Sox, finishing with a record of 3-1 and posting a 3.45 ERA across 45 games as a relief pitcher. In those 44 1/3 innings, he tallied 50 strikeouts while showcasing remarkable control with only three walks, which was the lowest among qualified relief pitchers in Major League Baseball. Over the last two years, he maintained a strong 2.16 ERA in a total of 100 games for the Red Sox.
The 38-year-old right-hander has a career record of 16 wins and 18 losses, with a lifetime ERA of 3.38 and 14 saves in 369 games—all of which have been in relief roles. Martin began his professional career with the Colorado Rockies in 2014 and had a brief stint with the New York Yankees the following year before spending time in Japan prior to his initial time with the Rangers.
In 2019, the Texas Rangers traded him to the Atlanta Braves. He later played for the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. Subsequently, he signed as a free agent with the Red Sox, securing a two-year contract worth $17.5 million.
