HOUSTON — The Houston Astros and pitcher Luis Garcia have successfully sidestepped arbitration by reaching a one-year deal valued at $1,875,000. This new agreement matches his earnings from the previous year when he was unable to take the mound in the major leagues as he was recuperating from Tommy John surgery.
Garcia, 28, underwent surgery on May 19, 2023. He did make a couple of minor league appearances later that year on June 28 and July 4; however, his recovery process was slower than expected.
Since 2020, Garcia has accumulated a record of 28 wins and 19 losses, with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.61, in 63 starts and six relief outings. Additionally, he showcased his talent on the international stage, representing Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
As for the Astros, they still have seven players who are poised to submit arbitration proposals on Thursday. This group includes right-hander Bryan Abreu, left-hander Framber Valdez, shortstop Jeremy Peña, third baseman Isaac Paredes, and outfielders Mauricio Dubón, Chas McCormick, and Jake Meyers.
