Ashton Jeanty, who made history by achieving the second-highest rushing yards in a single season in major-college football, is leaving Boise State to pursue a career in the NFL. Jeanty revealed his intention through a social media announcement on Tuesday, following the Broncos’ defeat to Penn State in the College Football Playoff just a week earlier.
In an impressive showing, Jeanty amassed a staggering total of 2,601 rushing yards over 14 games, placing him just shy of the record set by Barry Sanders from Oklahoma State, who rushed for 2,628 yards in only 11 games during the 1988 season.
Expressing his excitement about entering the next phase of his career, Jeanty tweeted, “The opportunity to play in the NFL is a dream of mine, and I’m proud to represent Boise State and all of those who have helped me along the way at the next level.”
Throughout the season, he was consistently dominant, rushing for at least 100 yards in every game and surpassing the 200-yard mark in six separate outings. Jeanty showcased his remarkable athleticism with an average of 6.95 yards per carry on a record-setting total of 374 attempts, which also led the nation. His outstanding performance earned him the Doak Walker Award, recognizing him as the nation’s premier running back, and he was also named a unanimous first-team Associated Press All-American.
Over the course of his three years at Boise State, Jeanty accumulated a remarkable total of 4,769 rushing yards and scored 50 touchdowns, further solidifying his legacy in college football. The departure of Jeanty marks a significant moment for both the player and the Boise State program as he transitions to the professional level.
