PARIS — The organization overseeing refereeing in French soccer stated that Monaco’s defender Wilfried Singo should have received a red card after injuring Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in their recent Ligue 1 matchup.
During the match, which ended in a 4-2 victory for PSG, Singo inadvertently struck Donnarumma in the face with his studs while attempting to jump over him after a blocked shot. The incident resulted in a noticeable cut beneath Donnarumma’s right eye, as evidenced by photographs taken at the scene.
Despite already having received a yellow card earlier in the game, Singo escaped a dismissal after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The refereeing department of the French federation acknowledged in its weekly assessment that the situation presented a challenge, depicting elements of recklessness, lack of intention, neglect, and a risk to the goalkeeper’s safety.
Nevertheless, they concluded that Singo should have been shown a red card by referee François Letexier following the video examination, since the sole of his boot made direct contact with Donnarumma’s face, amounting to a “gross foul” in accordance with the rules.
As a result of the altercation, Donnarumma sustained “facial trauma with multiple wounds,” but he has since returned to action, playing in goal as PSG secured a 1-0 victory over Monaco in the Champions Trophy this past weekend.
Singo later expressed regret for the incident and apologized to Donnarumma. However, he faced racial abuse on social media following the occurrence.
