NEW MOVIES TO STREAM JAN. 6-12
One of the standout American documentaries of the previous year, Lana Wilson’s “Look Into My Eyes,” will be available for streaming on Max starting Wednesday. The documentary delves into the lives of several psychics in New York City, showcasing their consultations, personal stories, and environments to create a profound examination of humanity within this strange and often misunderstood realm. Wilson, known for her works on Taylor Swift’s “Miss Americana” and Brooke Shields’ “Pretty Baby,” reflects on how her perspective shifted, realizing that the authenticity of these experiences may be less important than the genuine human connections they foster. “I had trivialized it and seen it as this silly thing… You can believe or not believe the supernatural part of this, but there’s this human connection that is undeniably going on,” she noted.
Another intriguing title arriving soon is “Get Away,” where British comedian Nick Frost, recognized for his role in the film “Hot Fuzz,” both writes and stars in this comedic horror tale. The story follows a family vacationing on a forbidding island filled with odd and ominous occurrences. Despite the eerie atmosphere that makes them feel as if they’ve stepped into a “Swedish horror” narrative, they remain determined to make the most of their holiday. Critic Jordan Hoffman described it as a “pleasurable film without too much depth.” “Get Away” will begin streaming on Shudder on Friday, January 10, featuring performances from Aisling Bea, Maisie Ayres, and Sebastian Croft.
NEW MUSIC TO STREAM JAN. 6-12
The music scene is witnessing the return of Ethel Cain, the Southern Gothic persona of Hayden Anhedönia. Known for her relaxed approach to pop songwriting that echoes themes of Americana and religiosity, she is set to release a new album titled “Perverts” on Wednesday, following her debut, “Preacher’s Daughter.” This album promises to take deeper strides into her reflective style of music-making, with the lead track “Punish” being an almost seven-minute piano-driven lament. Anticipate an atmospheric collection that is both cold and slow-moving, capturing Cain’s unique blend of lyrical storytelling and sound.
NEW SHOWS TO STREAM JAN. 6-12
This week marks the return of two popular celebrity reality competition shows. Fox’s “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test” will debut its latest season on Wednesday, inviting various stars from acting, reality television, and sports to endure a challenging boot camp commanded by former special forces members. Season three features notable figures such as Denise Richards, Brody Jenner, Cam Newton, Stephen Baldwin, Trista Rehn, and Ali Fedotowsky-Manno from “The Bachelorette.” Participants will undertake rigorous tasks, including leaping from a helicopter into water, all while being filmed and pushed to their limits in a quest for bragging rights.
Peacock’s “The Traitors” also returns, hosted by Alan Cumming, bringing together well-known personalities to participate in a game involving strategy and manipulation for a substantial cash prize. The show has been recognized for its excellence, recently winning the outstanding reality competition program award at the Emmy Awards.
Netflix is launching a new limited series titled “American Primeval,” which merges the themes of “Yellowstone” and “Game of Thrones.” Premiering on Thursday, this six-episode narrative revolves around settlers during America’s westward expansion, featuring stars such as Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin. The series, much like the “Yellowstone” prequel “1883,” highlights the violent struggles for land in the American West.
Wyle’s new series “The Pitt” sees him back in a hospital setting, this time not as a fresh intern but as an accomplished doctor, Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, working at a fictional hospital in Pittsburgh. It chronicles one hour of his hectic 15-hour shift in each episode. Interestingly, John Wells, the original showrunner of “ER,” is an executive producer of this series. However, the estate of Michael Crichton, who wrote the immortal pilot script for “ER,” has raised legal concerns, claiming “The Pitt” is an unauthorized remake of the original series. “The Pitt” will premiere on Thursday on Max.
In addition, Dick Wolf’s latest police drama “On Call” will also debut on Thursday, available for streaming on Prime Video. The series, which takes place in Long Beach, California, stars Troian Bellisario from “Pretty Little Liars” and Brandon Larracuente as patrol officers. It incorporates bodycam, dashcam, and cellphone footage to provide a realistic portrayal of police work. Lori Loughlin, known for her role in “Full House,” takes on a different character as a lieutenant in this series, marking a significant shift from her previous performances.
