Rodgers delivers 4 touchdown passes in potential farewell game as Jets defeat Dolphins 32-20

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — As Aaron Rodgers made his exit from the field, he shared a moment with his friend Davante Adams and acknowledged the supportive Jets crowd at MetLife Stadium. He left the field demonstrating a sense of closure, stating, “Yeah, that was cool,” with a smile on his face.

For the 41-year-old quarterback, this game not only served as a possible farewell to his illustrious career but also marked significant milestones. Rodgers achieved a season-high four touchdown passes during the 32-20 win over the Miami Dolphins, positioning him as the fifth player in NFL history to surpass 500 career regular-season touchdowns.

Reflecting on his future, Rodgers expressed a desire for some time to contemplate his next steps, both in the sport and his role with the Jets. “I just need some time away to think about my future in the game, and my future here if they want me to be a part of the next phase or they’re ready to move on,” he mentioned. He added, “Either way, I’m thankful for my two years here.”

As uncertainty looms over whether he will return for a 21st season, it remains to be seen if the Jets, who will transition to a new general manager and head coach, envision a future with him. When probed about his potential return, Rodgers candidly replied, “Oh, I don’t know… I honestly don’t know.”

Discussions involving the Jets’ ownership and management and Rodgers are anticipated as the team enters a significant offseason period. “I’m looking forward to those conversations,” he stated. He expressed satisfaction with his performance in recent weeks, saying, “It feels good to be able to do some of the things… I was capable of doing.”

Rodgers completed 23 of 36 passes for a total of 274 yards, including touchdown throws to Tyler Conklin, Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, and Breece Hall, despite suffering an interception early in the game. His performance also dashed the Dolphins’ hopes of a playoff spot, which became irrelevant after the Denver Broncos clinched the final AFC postseason berth with a win over Kansas City.

The Dolphins appear to be heading for their own offseason changes, especially after star wide receiver Tyreek Hill hinted at wanting to leave Miami. “This is the first time I haven’t been in the playoffs,” Hill said. “For me, I have to do what’s best for me and my family.” He expressed a desire for change, stating, “I’m opening the door. I’m out. It was great playing here.”

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel revealed that Hill was “unavailable” during the second half and mentioned he would discuss Hill’s comments with him soon.

In terms of game milestones, Rodgers reached his 500th touchdown with a pass to Conklin during the second quarter. After the touchdown, the entire offense celebrated with the quarterback, marking a significant achievement in his career. Moments later, he threw a 13-yard touchdown to Lazard just before halftime, extending his record further.

In the third quarter, the Jets increased their lead with a 20-yard field goal from Greg Joseph, but the Dolphins responded with a touchdown run from De’Von Achane early in the fourth. On the other hand, Rodgers quickly responded with his 502nd touchdown pass to Adams, solidifying their place in the record books as one of the most successful quarterback-wide receiver duos.

Though the Dolphins made a late push with another touchdown pass from Tyler Huntley to Jonnu Smith, Rodgers capped his day with a final touchdown pass to Hall, further enhancing his memorable performance.

Stats reflected a noteworthy day for several players: Garrett Wilson caught four passes to join an elite class of Jets with over 100 receptions in a season, while Adams reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the fifth consecutive year. The Jets’ defense also shined with multiple turnovers, including two interceptions by Ashtyn Davis.

However, the Jets’ day was marred by injuries, as defensive lineman Quinnen Williams left with a hamstring issue and offensive lineman Carter Warren suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

Despite the mixed outcomes, the game will hold significant memories for players and fans alike, setting the stage for a busy offseason ahead as both the Jets and Dolphins look to the future.
