TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The No. 19 ranked Alabama women’s basketball team, led by Zaay Green’s impressive 23 points, continued their winning streak with a decisive 68-49 victory over Missouri on Sunday. This win marks the Crimson Tide’s 15th triumph out of their first 16 games, showcasing their formidable presence on the court this season.
With this victory, Alabama has started its Southeastern Conference (SEC) schedule with two wins, a feat not achieved since the 2003-04 season. The game began with Missouri taking a brief 11-6 lead. However, Alabama quickly turned the tide as Aaliyah Nye hit two 3-pointers, and JeAnna Cunningham produced a three-point play to help the Tide take a 15-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Alabama increased its dominance, with the team scoring 11 of its 17 points from free throws, resulting in a comfortable 32-20 lead at halftime. Green was instrumental in maintaining the momentum, scoring the first seven points for Alabama in the third quarter and another five in the fourth, contributing to a significant lead that peaked at 30 points in the final quarter.
The Crimson Tide faced the challenge of playing without graduate guard Sarah Ashlee Barker, who is sidelined due to a lower-leg injury sustained during the previous game against Florida. In her absence, Green, a transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, stepped up with a shooting line of 8 for 19, including 2 for 5 from three-point range, solidifying her role as a leader on the team. Nye added to the scoreline with 11 points, shooting 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, while Essense Cody made her mark with 10 points and seven rebounds coming off the bench.
For Missouri, Angelique Ngalakulondi was a bright spot with nine points and eight rebounds, supported by Nyah Wilson, who also contributed nine points from the bench. Looking ahead, Alabama is set to challenge No. 5 Texas, while Missouri will face Georgia, with both games scheduled for Thursday.
