LONDON — Arsenal has climbed back to second in the Premier League standings and appears content with its current squad in light of the upcoming transfer window.

Mikel Arteta’s side secured a 3-1 victory over Brentford on Wednesday, allowing them to surpass Nottingham Forest and narrow the gap with league leaders Liverpool to six points.

“In the event that a promising opportunity arises, we will consider it,” Arteta remarked regarding potential January signings. “I have a strong appreciation for my players and truly value the quality and commitment they all demonstrate.”

Among those players is 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who made his first Premier League start due to the injury of Bukayo Saka. Nwaneri played a role in the second half with assistance on goals scored by Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli.

Brentford initially took the lead in the 13th minute at Gtech Community Stadium when Bryan Mbeumo found the net. However, Gabriel Jesus responded with an equalizer just before the 30-minute mark, marking his sixth goal in four matches.

The second half saw Merino score in the 50th minute, followed by Martinelli’s goal just three minutes later, sealing the team’s win.

This victory marks Arsenal’s second consecutive win without Saka, who is anticipated to miss action until at least March due to a right hamstring tear sustained during a match against Crystal Palace on December 21.

Arsenal has now extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches across all competitions. Liverpool currently holds a game in hand over Arsenal, who will face Brighton on Saturday, while Liverpool is set to host Manchester United on Sunday.

Brentford remains in 12th place in the league and has encountered three losses in its last four matches.

In terms of squad health, Arteta reported that several players were grappling with a virus leading up to and during the match.

Kai Havertz was sent home due to illness, while Declan Rice made a late entrance into the game, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute.

“These situations arise. It’s not uncommon to face injuries or illnesses, which is why I aim to finalize the lineup as close to kickoff as possible — you can wake up in the morning and be caught off guard,” the manager explained.
