LONDON – West Ham forward Michail Antonio reached out to fans on Tuesday after being released from the hospital, sharing positive news on his recovery following a car accident that occurred in early December.
“Happy New Year – and I’ll be back on that pitch soon,” Antonio stated in a message that was shared through the club’s official platform.
The 34-year-old, who represents Jamaica internationally, required surgery due to a fracture in his lower limb as a result of the one-car accident that took place outside London on December 7. His road to recovery is expected to be a long one.
In his message, Antonio expressed his gratitude, mentioning that he often struggles to articulate what he’s thankful for during this time of year. However, he noted that this year, his feelings were clear: “being alive” was at the top of his list.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui previously referred to the aftermath of the crash as a “miracle,” highlighting the fortunate outcome given the circumstances.
Antonio extended his thanks to everyone who supported him after the accident, acknowledging the emergency services, the air ambulance team, and all the staff at West Ham United FC.
Since joining West Ham from Nottingham Forest in 2015, Antonio has made over 300 appearances for the club and participated in all 14 matches this season before the incident impacted his playtime.
In a show of solidarity during their first match following the accident, West Ham players wore “Antonio 9” shirts prior to kicking off against Wolverhampton at the London Stadium. These match-worn kits were later autographed and auctioned off, raising around $75,000 to benefit the NHS and Air Ambulances UK.
The club expressed appreciation for the first responders and medical team, stating, “Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff, and the NHS for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident.”
