The FBI has issued a warning to various sports leagues regarding crime syndicates that are increasingly targeting professional athletes amidst a series of burglaries affecting notable NFL and NBA players.
According to the FBI’s Liaison Information Report, which has come to light, these burglaries are occurring due to a widespread belief that athletes’ residences may be rich with luxury items such as designer bags, expensive jewelry, high-end watches, and large amounts of cash.
In response to the situation, both the NFL and NBA have proactively disseminated security alerts to their athletes. This precautionary measure has been taken particularly in light of incidents that have occurred while players were away on road games with their teams. The NFL’s communication highlighted that homes of athletes from various sports disciplines are becoming more frequently targeted by well-organized criminal groups.
The most recent victim of such criminal activity is Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, whose home was reportedly burglarized. Lara Beth Seager, Doncic’s business manager, confirmed through various media outlets that the incident took place on a Friday night while the athlete was absent from his residence. Following the break-in, Doncic reported the incident to the police.
This issue is not limited to Doncic; several high-profile NFL players, including Patrick Mahomes from Kansas City, Joe Burrow from Cincinnati, and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, have also found themselves victims of burglaries. Additionally, NBA players like Bobby Portis and Mike Conley Jr. have experienced similar breaches.
The FBI’s report indicates that organized crime groups from South America exploit publicly available data and social media platforms to monitor athletes’ routines and track their movements. These groups employ advanced technology that enables them to circumvent alarm systems, disrupt wireless internet connections, disable surveillance equipment, and mask their identities adequately.
In light of these developments, athletes are urged to remain vigilant by reporting any unusual activities, maintaining a detailed inventory of valuable possessions and their locations, and enhancing security measures. Moreover, the FBI advised athletes to exercise caution regarding their social media posts, recommending that they refrain from showcasing valuables, revealing the interiors of their homes, and broadcasting real-time updates during vacations.
