Lille’s star forward Jonathan David weighing new contract proposal

LILLE, France — Jonathan David has expressed that he is weighing a potential new contract with Lille and estimates his likelihood of remaining with the club at “50-50.”

The 24-year-old Canadian forward is currently in his fifth season at Lille and stands at the top of the league’s scoring list, having netted 11 goals in 15 matches. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, reports suggest he has been presented with an offer for a two-year extension.

In an interview with the regional publication La Voix du Nord on Monday, David noted, “As the president (Olivier Létang) has mentioned multiple times, the discussions are ongoing. We are in talks, but no concrete decision has been made. The possibility remains open. It’s 50-50.”

This season, David has scored a total of 17 goals across all competitions, which includes four in the Champions League and two during qualifying rounds. This brings his overall tally to 101 goals since his arrival at the club in 2020.

Regarded as one of the most desirable forwards in Europe, David’s potential departure could leave Lille at a disadvantage, especially if he opts not to renew his contract. Despite this, Létang has previously stated that he has no intentions of selling David during the January transfer window.

Currently sitting in fourth place in the league standings, Lille is set to face off against the struggling Nantes this Saturday as Ligue 1 action resumes following the winter break.
