SAO PAULO — Authorities have discovered a woman’s body following the collapse of a bridge that connects two northern Brazilian states, raising the confirmed death count to nine.
The Brazilian navy reported on Friday that the remains were located approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge. Currently, there are still eight individuals listed as missing.
The tragic incident occurred when several vehicles fell into the Tocantins River after a portion of the bridge gave way on Sunday.
Law enforcement officials, working at the intersection of the northern states of Maranhao and Tocantins, confirmed that the catastrophe involved four trucks, two cars, and two motorcycles that plunged into the waters below.
The bridge, measuring 533 meters (1,748 feet) in length, spans the distance between Estreito and Aguiarnopolis and was constructed in the 1960s. For reference, it is situated around 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) north of Brazil’s capital, Brasilia.
