CNN has recently acknowledged that a compelling segment it broadcasted, featuring a Syrian man released from a Damascus prison after the downfall of Bashar Assad’s regime, did not portray the entire truth. The network confirmed that the individual featured in the report by correspondent Clarissa Ward, which originally aired on December 11, had apparently presented a false identity.

“This moment encapsulates the complexity of the situation in Syria,” remarked Jake Tapper of CNN on Tuesday.

The segment showcased Ward being guided by a Syrian rebel through a prison previously operated by the Syrian Air Force’s intelligence services, which had reportedly been vacated following the regime’s fall. However, this assumption was challenged when they encountered a locked door. The rebel proceeded to shoot off the lock, revealing a cell where a man was discovered hiding under a blanket. He appeared disoriented and nervous, eagerly drinking water when offered, exclaiming “oh, God, there is light!” upon exiting, and embracing the guard upon learning of the regime change.

The man identified himself to Ward as Adel Ghurbal from Homs, claiming to be a civilian who had been apprehended three months before and held in three different prisons.

However, just a few days later, the Syrian fact-checking organization Verify-Sy indicated that this individual was actually Salama Mohammad Salama, a former intelligence officer under the Assad regime. CNN confirmed the resemblance through facial recognition technology, which showed over a 99 percent likelihood that this was the same person featured in their report.

Ward stated on Tuesday that CNN remains unaware of the reasons for Salama’s arrest. Verify-Sy has reported that Salama, known for extortion-like activities, was imprisoned due to a conflict with a higher-ranking officer over a dispute involving profit sharing, though CNN has been unable to verify this information or locate Salama.

A spokesperson from CNN emphasized that the details regarding the prison visit were not known in advance to anyone outside the network. The scenes reported were depicted as they unfolded in real time.

The video was striking, and it was undoubtedly tempting to share Ward’s story. While CNN conducted thorough investigations afterward to uncover the discrepancies, questions linger as to whether the network could have or should have taken additional steps to authenticate the prisoner’s narrative prior to airing the report.

“I think we need to approach this with humility regarding the challenges we face,” Ward expressed on air Tuesday. “The situation is chaotic, filled with rapid changes, making real-time verification incredibly difficult… Stories can take unexpected turns. We must continue to report without fear or favoritism, but this environment presents significant challenges, and we should acknowledge that.”
