TOWSON, Md. — A shooting followed by a fiery car crash occurred Tuesday night in a suburban region north of Baltimore, resulting in one fatality and injuries to nine individuals, according to local police reports.
Authorities were alerted to gunfire across a neighborhood close to the location where the vehicle ultimately collided outside of a seemingly closed funeral home, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough stated during a press briefing.
While details regarding the shooting itself remain sparse, Chief McCullough mentioned that investigators suspect the incident was neither random nor widespread.
“It seems that the people involved had some form of acquaintance, and this incident was deliberate and targeted,” he noted.
Officials have not disclosed the conditions of the nine victims who were taken to local hospitals, nor is it currently known if all of them sustained gunshot wounds.
Reports indicated that some bullets struck the exterior of the funeral home, and there were additional reports of gunfire in various areas nearby. McCullough characterized the situation as a “rolling type of gun event” that culminated at the funeral home. When police arrived in response to reports of the shooting, the burning vehicle was found overturned.
Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski affirmed that his administration will allocate necessary support to assist police and fire investigators in their efforts to resolve the incident.
“This is an unsettling incident, especially for residents of Baltimore County,” Olszewski remarked. “Such events are rare in our area, and it truly challenges our sense of safety.”
