US unveils $1 billion embassy in Mexico City following extended delays

MEXICO CITY — On Tuesday, the U.S. government inaugurated its new embassy in Mexico, a project that has been in the making for over two years and represents an investment exceeding $1 billion. This facility stands as the largest U.S. embassy globally, described by outgoing Ambassador Ken Salazar as a testament to the unique bond shared by the two nations.

Construction for the embassy commenced in February 2018. The U.S. will vacate its existing building located along Paseo de la Reforma, a prominent avenue in Mexico City that has frequently witnessed demonstrations and public protests over the years. The new embassy is situated on a site that once served industrial purposes and required significant cleanup due to contamination issues. This area, known as New Polanco, has seen the development of modern museums and upscale projects spearheaded by billionaire Carlos Slim.

Despite the dedication event, the embassy will not be open to the public for some time, with full access anticipated not before late next year as construction and finishing touches are still underway.

The timing of the dedication is notable, coinciding with the imminent return of President-elect Donald Trump to the White House next month. Trump has previously asserted points regarding immigration and drug trafficking, indicating harsh measures, including mass deportations and potential tariffs on Mexico if more stringent actions are not taken against these issues.

In connection with these developments, Trump has shown support for Ron Johnson, who previously served as U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, as the next ambassador to Mexico, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
