The New York Jets conducted an interview on Tuesday with former Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson as they seek to fill their GM position.
Robinson marks the second GM candidate to be interviewed by New York, following the meeting with former Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff on Monday.
Robinson held the general manager position for the Titans from 2016 until his dismissal towards the end of the 2022 season.
Under his management, the team achieved a record of 66-43, made playoff appearances four times, and clinched the AFC South title twice.
The Jets are currently in the process of identifying a new general manager after the firing of Joe Douglas on November 19.
Phil Savage, a senior football adviser with the Jets since 2019, is serving as the interim GM during this search.
The organization has the freedom to initiate discussions with GM candidates who are not currently contracted with other teams.
However, conversations with candidates who are still employed by other franchises can only commence once those teams conclude their seasons.
New York, which has recorded a disappointing 4-10 record this season, is additionally in search of a head coach after Robert Saleh was let go on October 8, leading to defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich stepping in as the interim.
Both the new general manager and head coach will face the daunting task of breaking a playoff drought that has persisted for 14 years, which is currently the longest active streak in the NFL.
They will also need to assess the situation regarding quarterback Aaron Rodgers and whether he intends to play next season, and potentially beyond.
During his tenure with the Titans, 48-year-old Robinson managed to avoid any losing seasons in his first six years.
He is credited for high-impact draft selections such as running back Derrick Henry and offensive tackle Jack Conklin in 2016, as well as wide receiver A.J. Brown in 2019.
However, Robinson faced significant backlash for failing to retain Brown and ultimately trading him to the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2022 NFL draft, a decision that was reportedly not favored by then-head coach Mike Vrabel.
Interestingly, Vrabel could also be a candidate for the Jets’ head coaching position.
Before his time with the Titans, Robinson served as the director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three years and gained 11 years of experience working in the scouting department of the New England Patriots.
