OXFORD, Miss. – In an impressive display of basketball, freshman Sira Thienou achieved a personal best, scoring 23 points with near-flawless shooting, leading No. 22 Mississippi to a resounding 94-39 victory over South Alabama on Sunday.
Thienou showcased her skills by successfully making 7 out of 8 attempts from the field, including a perfect 2 for 2 from beyond the arc, and converting 7 out of 8 free throw attempts. Supporting her in the offense were Starr Jacobs with 15 points, while Christeen Iwuala and Rhema Collins each contributed 10 points coming off the bench for the Rebels, who improved to 7 wins and 3 losses.
Despite a slow start where they shot only 27% in the first quarter, Mississippi capitalized on their free-throw opportunities to build a 22-16 lead. Following that, the Rebels took control of the game, especially evident in the second quarter when they limited the Jaguars to just 3 points and executed significant scoring runs of 12-0 and 11-0.
The Mississippi defense was relentless, producing 15 steals from a total of 30 turnovers by South Alabama, which transitioned into 37 points for the Rebels. Additionally, they excelled in the paint with 54 points and received a solid contribution of 34 points from their bench players.
For South Alabama (3-6), Daniela Gonzalez was the standout, leading her team with 13 points. The game marked the second consecutive match in which the Rebels held their opponent below 40 points, and they have now managed to keep six teams under 50 points throughout the season.
Looking ahead, Mississippi is set to host Mississippi Valley State on Saturday and Alcorn State on December 30, before kicking off their SEC campaign on January 2 against Auburn.
