Vancouver Whitecaps ownership reveals intentions to sell the Major League Soccer franchise.

The Vancouver Whitecaps are officially on the market, as the current ownership group of the Major League Soccer team announced their decision on Friday.

In a press release from the club, the ownership stated that “now is the right moment for a new owner who has the platform, resources, and ambition to elevate the club’s competitiveness within MLS and ensure the club reaches its considerable potential.” To facilitate the sale and assist during the transition, they have enlisted the services of Goldman Sachs.

Greg Kerfoot has been at the helm of the club since 2002, when it was still a part of the North American Soccer League. In 2008, he was joined by Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett, and former NBA superstar Steve Nash, leading to the Whitecaps’ induction into Major League Soccer in 2011.

During the 2024 regular season, the Whitecaps recorded a record of 13 wins, 13 losses, and 8 draws, ultimately progressing through to the playoffs after defeating the Portland Timbers in a wildcard match. Their playoff run came to a halt when they were eliminated by LAFC in the opening round, resulting in the dismissal of coach Vanni Sartini.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the contributions of the current ownership group in a statement, saying, “The Vancouver Whitecaps owe much of their current status to the vision and dedication of this outstanding ownership team. The Whitecaps represent a fantastic club situated in a vibrant city. On behalf of Major League Soccer, I want to express our gratitude for their significant contributions and look forward to collaborating with them to find new ownership for the club.”
