LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville has granted a five-year contract extension to athletic director Josh Heird, which will last until June 2030. During Heird’s 2.5 years in the role, he has overseen pivotal hiring decisions for the men’s basketball program as well as the football team, most notably bringing aboard coach Jeff Brohm.
On Thursday, the Board of Trustees for the university approved the contract extension, following the endorsement from the University of Louisville Athletic Association board just three days prior. Heird initially stepped in as interim athletic director in December 2021 and was named the permanent AD by June of the following year.
University President Kim Schatzel expressed confidence in Heird’s capabilities, emphasizing that the extension reflects the institution’s trust in his leadership. Schatzel remarked, “He is the right person and right leader” to guide the athletic department toward future success.
Heird’s leadership has also included several key staffing changes. Notably, he dismissed basketball coach Chris Mack in January 2022 and subsequently hired former Louisville player Kenny Payne as his replacement just two months later. However, after two challenging seasons, Heird terminated Payne’s contract in March and appointed Pat Kelsey shortly after.
Heird’s achievements are further highlighted by the recruitment of Jeff Brohm, a former Louisville quarterback and coach, who took over the football program in December 2022. Under Brohm’s guidance, the Cardinals had an impressive season, achieving 10 victories and securing a place in the ACC Championship game for the first time. They are also set to participate in the Sun Bowl on December 31 in El Paso, Texas, marking their second consecutive postseason appearance.
Additionally, Heird has extended contracts for several successful coaches, including women’s basketball head coach Jeff Walz, volleyball coach Dani Busboom-Kelly, and baseball coach Dan McDonnell. His notable accomplishments also encompass a substantial $41 million naming rights agreement for the Cardinal Stadium football field and a $4 million renovation project. Moreover, Heird successfully obtained a $1 million donation aimed at enhancing Louisville’s Jim Patterson Stadium for baseball.
In addition to his role as athletic director, Heird is also a member of the NCAA women’s basketball selection committee, further showcasing his commitment to athletics at Louisville.
