DALLAS — In a notable move within the American League East, the Boston Red Sox have completed a trade with the New York Yankees, acquiring catcher Carlos Narváez on Wednesday. In return, Boston has given up minor league pitcher Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz along with some international signing bonus pool funds.

Earlier in the day, during the winter meetings, Boston made a significant trade by sending highly-rated catching prospect Kyle Teel to the Chicago White Sox. Teel was part of a package that included four prospects, aimed at bringing All-Star left-handed pitcher Garret Crochet to the team.

Carlos Narváez made his major league debut with the Yankees this year, recording a batting average of .231 over six games. The 26-year-old Venezuelan player was initially signed by the Yankees as an undrafted free agent in 2015. During his time with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he posted a .254 batting average, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 58 runs across 96 games. Narváez has shown versatility, starting 58 games as a catcher, while also contributing in 23 games as a designated hitter and 12 at first base.

To accommodate the addition of Narváez to their roster, the Red Sox designated second baseman Enmanuel Valdez for assignment. Valdez was the starter for Boston on Opening Day last season.

Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, the player traded to the Yankees, is a 21-year-old pitched who had a combined record of 5-5 with a 2.91 ERA, notching 102 strikeouts over 89 2/3 innings pitched in 21 games this year, with 20 of those as a starter. The young Puerto Rican talent spent time with two teams, with most of his appearances coming at Class-A Salem. In his last three minor league seasons within the Red Sox organization, he has achieved an 11-11 record and a commendable 2.60 ERA. Boston drafted Rodriguez-Cruz in the fourth round of the 2021 amateur draft.
