Tiger Woods set to make comeback at PNC Championship alongside son Charlie

Tiger Woods is set to participate in the PNC Championship alongside his 15-year-old son Charlie, marking his first competitive outing since the British Open in July. This appearance comes after Woods underwent his sixth back surgery three months ago.

Since 2020, Woods has competed in the 36-hole PNC Championship with Charlie. The tournament draws major champions and players from The Players Championship, who often participate alongside family members, usually their children.

Woods expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Playing together is something we look forward to, and it’s always more special when you’re surrounded by friends and family.” The PNC Championship is scheduled for December 21-22 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club located in Orlando, Florida, and will feature 20 teams. This year will also see newcomers Fred Couples playing with stepson Hunter Hannemann, along with Trevor Immelman and his son Jacob.

Since the tournament is recognized by the PGA Tour Champions, Woods will be allowed to use a golf cart, which is crucial for his participation. He opted out of the previous week’s Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, where he serves as host, because he felt his game wasn’t sharp enough to compete against the top 40 players globally.

In April, Woods made history by achieving his 24th consecutive cut at the Masters, but he missed the cut in the other three major tournaments this year. After undergoing a microdiscectomy in September to relieve pain radiating down his legs, this marked his sixth surgery on his lower back. The most significant of these procedures was a fusion surgery in 2017. Subsequently, he captured the Tour Championship a year later and won his 15th major title at the Masters in 2019. His last win occurred at the Zozo Championship in Japan in the fall of 2019, where he tied Sam Snead for the record of 82 career titles on the PGA Tour.

However, Woods has not specified how frequently he might compete in 2025. “Whether my commitment going forward is once a month, yeah, I could say that all over again,” he mentioned last week. “But I truly don’t know. I’m just trying to rehab and still get stronger and better and feel better, really give myself the best chance I can going into next year.”

The PNC Championship will also showcase notable players, including 13-year-old Will McGee, the son of Annika Sorenstam, as well as 89-year-old Gary Player. Additionally, Nelly Korda is set to return to play alongside her father, former tennis Grand Slam champion Petr Korda.
