Getafe secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Espanyol on Monday, lifting themselves out of the relegation zone in La Liga while increasing the pressure on their Catalan counterparts.
Álvaro Rodriguez, a striker on loan from Real Madrid, netted the game’s only goal with an impressive header just seven minutes into the match.
Both teams had opportunities to score, particularly in a more energetic second half, but the scoreline remained unchanged at 1-0.
With this win, Getafe moved up two spots to 15th place in the league table, creating a three-point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone that Espanyol currently occupies.
Manolo González’s team has now experienced its sixth consecutive defeat on the road.
The match was witnessed by a modest crowd of only 7,559 at the Coliseum, yet Getafe’s goalkeeper, David Soria, emphasized the importance of home performances for their season’s success.
“We have to be strong at home, in front of our own fans,” Soria remarked. “This is where our salvation lies.”
