The victor of this matchup will advance to face tenth-ranked Arizona State in the Peach Bowl, set for January 1, in Atlanta for the CFP quarterfinals.

Texas, sporting an 11-2 record, was placed as the fifth seed following a narrow 22-19 overtime defeat to Georgia in the SEC championship game, which also took place in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, Arizona State (11-2) secured a bye in the playoffs after an impressive 45-19 victory against Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game.

Clemson, with a record of 10-3, clinched an automatic berth to the CFP by winning their conference title game against SMU, finishing with a score of 34-31.
Despite being rated 16th in the CFP rankings, the Tigers received the twelfth and lowest seed due to being the fifth-highest ranked conference champion, which meant they did not receive a bye and are instead traveling to Austin, Texas.
