Dillon Gabriel’s Oregon tenure evokes memories of former Hawaii-native quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Dillon Gabriel encountered a unique situation upon joining the Oregon Ducks this season.
Having previously worn No. 8 during his time at Oklahoma, Gabriel was aware that this number held particular importance in Eugene due to its association with Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.
Both athletes have much in common: they are dual-threat quarterbacks with impressive statistics, and they share roots in Hawaii, deeply influenced by the culture of their home islands.
Mariota had initially chosen No. 8 to represent the number of Hawaiian islands, while the design of his helmet’s facemask mirrored the 808 area code associated with Hawaii.

In a moment of determination, Gabriel reached out to Mariota to seek his approval for continuing to wear the same number.
Mariota, who currently plays for the NFL’s Washington Commanders, graciously consented.
“Seeing someone from Hawaii achieve such great heights at a high level, and then transitioning to the NFL, provides inspiration and makes it feel attainable,” Gabriel reflected.
The quarterback has excelled as the leader of the undefeated Ducks (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten), steering them towards the Big Ten Championship game set for Saturday against No. 4 Penn State (11-1, 8-1) in Indianapolis.

Gabriel, who showcased his talents at Central Florida for three years before joining Oklahoma, has accumulated an impressive total of 183 career touchdowns, further solidifying his record as the all-time leader in NCAA history.
His scoring breakdown includes 149 passing touchdowns, 33 rushing touchdowns, and one receiving touchdown.
He is also tied with former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, who is currently with the Denver Broncos, for an FBS-record 61 career starts.
Gabriel remains modest as he reflects on his journey.
“In today’s world, there’s a lot of focus on results, but I believe in allowing the process to unfold. My journey has been about eagerness to improve and embracing growth, which is evident in my progress,” he stated.

As a vital component of the Ducks’ offense, Gabriel has thrown for 3,277 yards and secured 24 touchdown passes in 12 games this season, in addition to rushing for seven touchdowns.
Mariota, during his time at Oregon, racked up 104 touchdown passes and 29 rushing touchdowns. He famously led the Ducks to a national championship appearance in the 2014 season.
Coach Dan Lanning acknowledged Gabriel’s exceptional leadership, stating, “It’s clear we benefit from the extensive experience at quarterback. Dillon’s ability to remain composed during chaotic moments in games is remarkable, coupled with his excellent decision-making skills.”

The Ducks previously achieved a 12-0 record during the 2010 season, culminating in a trip to the BCS National Championship game.
Notable victories this season include a thrilling 32-31 home win over Ohio State and a strong 38-17 victory against Michigan on their home turf.
Oregon concluded the regular season with a dominant 49-21 win against rival Washington, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record in their inaugural year in the Big Ten.
Gabriel contributed significantly in that game, passing for two touchdowns and running for another.

Penn State secured its place in the conference title game with a decisive 44-7 victory over Maryland, aided by Ohio State’s narrow 13-10 defeat to Michigan.
The Ducks and Nittany Lions have faced each other only once before, which occurred in the 1995 Rose Bowl, where Penn State, under the leadership of Joe Paterno, won 38-20.
The decisive game in Indianapolis will be crucial, as the victor will earn a first-round bye in the newly expanded 12-team playoffs, although both teams have already clinched playoff spots regardless of the outcome.

Gabriel’s accolade collection expanded on Tuesday as he was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.
“He has earned the respect and trust of his teammates and coaches,” Lanning emphasized.
“His work ethic is remarkable, and his calmness on the field is something to be applauded. I take great pride in what he has brought to the team.”
