HOUSTON — Azeez Al-Shaair of the Houston Texans has been handed a three-game suspension by the NFL due to multiple breaches of player safety regulations. This decision comes after Al-Shaair’s controversial hit on Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars, which resulted in Lawrence suffering a concussion.
The suspension was made public by Jon Runyan, the NFL’s vice president of football operations, who communicated the details in a formal letter to Al-Shaair. In the letter, Runyan highlighted Al-Shaair’s history of infractions regarding personal fouls and violations related to sportsmanship over the past few seasons.
In a recent game where Houston triumphed over Jacksonville with a score of 23-20, Trevor Lawrence returned to play after being sidelined due to a sprained left shoulder. During a critical moment in the second quarter, Lawrence attempted to escape pressure by scrambling left on a second-and-7. Just as he began to slide, Al-Shaair executed a hit with his forearm while Lawrence was in a vulnerable position.
Following the collision, Lawrence exhibited signs typically associated with a concussion, where he clenched his fists, indicating a possible “fencing response” that often follows a serious head injury. He remained on the ground for an extended period as his teammates rushed to support him, creating a tense moment on the field as they confronted Al-Shaair.
