MADRID — Four individuals accused of racially insulting forward Lamine Yamal and several Barcelona players during last month’s league “clasico” at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium are facing a one-year ban from attending sports events in Spain.
On Monday, the anti-violence committee of the Spanish soccer federation recommended these bans along with fines as high as 5,000 euros (approximately $5,200). The allegations stem from an incident during Barcelona’s 4-0 triumph over Real Madrid in a league match that took place on October 26.
Moreover, the committee responsible for combating violence and discrimination in sports has also proposed a similar one-year ban and fine for another individual accused of attacking two visiting fans outside the stadium following the match.
Spanish law enforcement had detained the accused fans, citing sufficient evidence to support claims that they directed racist slurs at the players during Barcelona’s victory.
Footage circulating on social media captured the alleged racial slurs aimed at Yamal after he netted Barcelona’s third goal during the second half. The 17-year-old celebrated by gesturing toward the Madrid fans, which some interpreted as provocative behavior.
Several spectators could be heard using derogatory language directed at Yamal and his fellow Barcelona teammates. In response, Real Madrid swiftly condemned the behavior and collaborated with authorities to identify those responsible, a sentiment echoed by the Spanish league.
Real Madrid has been vocal about racist insults aimed at its player Vinícius Júnior, who is also Black, for several years, including incidents during matches held at Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium. The fight against racism in Spanish soccer continues to be a significant issue, particularly concerning slurs directed at players like Vinícius.
