ESTERO, Fla. — In a commanding performance, JJ Quinerly put up a significant 22 points, with 18 scored in the first half alone, as West Virginia dominated High Point with an impressive 89-54 victory in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Showcase featuring eight teams.
Jordan Thomas came off the bench to contribute another 18 points, while Jordan Harrison added 13 for the Mountaineers. High Point’s Aaliyah Collins managed to put up 11 points in response.
With this win, the 12th-ranked Mountaineers improved their record to 7-0 and are set to face unbeaten Boise State (also 7-0) in the next round, after the Broncos narrowly defeated Illinois State 79-76 on Friday.
The game began explosively for West Virginia, with Quinerly scoring three layups and sinking two free throws within just over three minutes, allowing her team to surge to a 9-0 lead. Quinerly’s scoring during that span outpaced High Point’s total for the entire first quarter, as the Mountaineers ended the quarter with a comfortable 22-7 advantage.
In the second quarter, West Virginia extended its lead further. An 8-2 run propelled them to more than a 20-point cushion, highlighted by another layup from Quinerly, two free throws, alongside contributions from Jordan Thomas and Celia Riviere, who helped push the score to 30-9.
This victory marked West Virginia’s third consecutive win against High Point, showcasing their strong performance in this early season matchup.
