BOLT, W.Va. — On Friday, a sheriff’s deputy in West Virginia fatally shot an individual who allegedly opened fire on him while he was answering a 911 emergency call, according to official reports.
The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office has not yet disclosed the identity of the deceased, stating that they are in the process of informing the family members. In a statement shared on Facebook, they provided details surrounding the incident.
Law enforcement officials were dispatched to a home in Bolt, located approximately 40 miles south of Charleston, at around 9 a.m. on that day. They were responding to a 911 call that reported a person believed to be mentally disturbed and armed with a firearm.
Upon arriving at the scene, the first deputy was reportedly shot at immediately and responded by returning fire, resulting in the death of the shooter, as detailed in the statement from the sheriff’s office.
The injured officer was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Currently, both the sheriff’s office and the West Virginia State Police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
