Kwon Alexander has reached an agreement to join the Detroit Lions, a move aimed at strengthening their struggling linebacking group.
His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed the deal on Friday.
At 30 years of age, Alexander has spent time on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad this season, starting in two games and serving as a reserve in an additional game.
The Lions find themselves in urgent need of linebacker assistance as Malcolm Rodriguez suffered a knee injury during Thursday’s victory over Chicago, which Coach Dan Campbell has expressed concerns about.
Rodriguez had been stepping in for Alex Anzalone, who is currently on injured reserve due to a broken arm and is slated to be sidelined for at least another month.
Furthermore, the Lions are also missing veteran linebackers Derrick Barnes and Jalen Reeves-Maybin due to their own injuries.
With the NFC-leading Lions holding an impressive 11-1 record, they are set to face off against the Green Bay Packers (9-3) on Thursday night, and Alexander may be called upon to make his debut with the team.
Having a wealth of experience, Alexander was previously with the New Orleans Saints in 2020 when Campbell served as an assistant coach there.
Throughout his career, Alexander has started in 90 of 107 games across multiple teams, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Denver Broncos.
This season, he has recorded eight tackles and forced one fumble during his three appearances with the Broncos.
As a standout player from LSU, Alexander boasts an impressive career total of 448 tackles, complemented by 13 and a half sacks throughout his time in the league.
