MADRID — The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has reported that the global tennis playing community has exceeded 100 million participants.
A comprehensive global study published by the federation on Thursday revealed that approximately 106 million individuals played at least one game of tennis in the past year, marking a significant rise of 25% since 2019.
The federation projected that it is on course to welcome another 30 million players into the sport based on their previous figures from four years ago.
The number of female tennis participants increased by 8%, although the share of female players as a percentage of the overall player base has dropped from 47% in 2019 to 40% currently.
Additionally, the federation noted a 13% increase in the total number of tennis coaches, with women making up 24% of this group, a rise from 20% in 2019.
Luca Santilli, the ITF tennis development director, mentioned that there isn’t a “specific reason” to explain the decline in the proportion of female participants.
However, he expressed optimism that the growth in female coaching roles will lead to positive changes and encourage more women to engage in the sport.
