BARCELONA, Spain — Diego Simeone became visibly emotional when discussing his deep connection with Atletico Madrid after his team achieved a comeback victory against Alaves, finishing 2-1 on Saturday.
The Argentine coach has been at the helm of Atletico since December 2011, making him the longest-tenured manager currently in Spain’s top professional league.
Simeone is easily recognized by his iconic all-black outfits and the fiery enthusiasm he exhibits on the sidelines. He consistently rallies his players with fervent shouts and gestures, particularly during home matches, urging fans to fervently support the team.
Known for his methodical “game by game” philosophy, he typically refrains from delving into discussions about future matches, sticking closely to the task at hand.
However, during an interview after Saturday’s match, the 54-year-old former player displayed a more vulnerable side. While speaking to journalists, including former Atletico player Juanfran Torres, his emotions got the better of him when prompted about discussions regarding Atletico’s future without him.
“I am living the moment. My players are working hard and interpreting what we need and want,” Simeone stated, but he struggled to continue as emotions swelled within him.
“I am calm. I am at peace. I am in the place where I want,” he expressed, before his voice faltered as he emotionally remarked, “I love, I love the place where I am.” Before concluding abruptly, he lowered his head, murmuring, “and that’s it, ciao,” handing the microphone to Juanfran, and quickly departing the scene.
Simeone has revolutionized Atletico, transforming it from a club that often fell short against rivals Real Madrid into a formidable team that regularly competes in the Champions League. His tenure has seen the club clinch two Spanish league titles, two Europa League trophies, one Copa del Rey, and reach two Champions League finals.
The organization has not hinted at any changes regarding the coaching staff, nor have there been rumors circulating in local sports media about such a shift.
Simeone’s contract with the club extends until June 2027, providing him a solid basis to continue his successful endeavor at Atletico.
