COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Kaleb Johnson had an impressive game, rushing for 164 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 35 attempts, while Kamari Moulton added a significant spark with a 68-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, leading Iowa to a 29-13 victory over Maryland on Saturday.
Johnson scored his 21st rushing touchdown of the season, pushing through from 2 yards out in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes improved their record to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten, bouncing back from a recent defeat against UCLA. Meanwhile, Maryland’s hopes of achieving bowl eligibility by winning their last two regular-season games looked bleak as they struggled, especially in the first half, ultimately falling behind 16-0.
Kicking was a strong point for Iowa, with Drew Stevens successfully making five field goals, including impressive distances of 54 yards in the second quarter and field goals of 50 and 49 yards in the third quarter.
Iowa, known for a more methodical approach, managed just 46 offensive plays in the first half, taking over six minutes on each of their initial three drives, resulting in a fumble, a field goal, and Johnson’s touchdown.
Maryland attempted to switch things up by bringing in backup quarterback MJ Morris after starter Billy Edwards Jr. struggled during the first two possessions. However, the Terps were still trailing 13-0 by halftime. Edwards returned to the field in the third quarter but was injured in a collision with Iowa’s defensive back, Xavier Nwankpa, while leading the team down to the Iowa 3-yard line.
Morris completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tai Felton, narrowing the score to 16-6, though their attempt for a 2-point conversion failed. Later, a 12-yard touchdown pass from Morris to Felton brought the score to 19-13 with just over 11 minutes remaining. Iowa quickly responded, as Moulton’s explosive run solidified their lead with under two minutes left in the game.
In summary, Iowa’s game plan revolved heavily around their running game, with quarterback Jackson Stratton taking a backseat as the rushing attack proved successful. The Hawkeyes’ defensive strength in the first half laid the groundwork for their victory. Conversely, Maryland struggled to counteract Iowa’s straightforward strategies, allowing the Hawkeyes to accumulate 268 rushing yards on 58 attempts.
Looking ahead, Iowa will host Nebraska on Friday, while Maryland travels to face Penn State on Saturday.
