MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Yet another impressive achievement unfolded for Miami quarterback Cam Ward this week. The Heisman Trophy candidate, who has already established the single-season touchdown pass record for the Hurricanes, is also on track to surpass the school’s completion percentage record. In a game on Saturday, he passed the legendary Bernie Kosar to set a new milestone for passing yards in a season for Miami.
Ward achieved this remarkable feat with a 13-yard completion to Damien Martinez late in the second quarter, which pushed his season total to 3,643 yards. This eclipsed Kosar’s long-standing record of 3,642 yards, set back in 1984, a record that had remained untouched for 40 years.
The pass to Martinez, which marked a significant milestone, was Ward’s 254th completion of the season, positioning him just eight completions shy of breaking Kosar’s Miami single-season record of 262, also achieved in 1984.
Currently, Ward boasts a completion rate of 67% this season, aiming to break the Miami single-season record of 65.8% previously set by Tyler Van Dyke last year. Moreover, if he maintains this trajectory, he is also set to surpass the career completion percentage record of 64.3%, held by D’Eriq King during his time in 2020 and 2021, for those with a minimum of 300 attempts.
