Kendall Bostic delivered a standout performance with a personal best of 31 points, while Makira Cook contributed 20 to lead No. 22 Illinois to an impressive 85-66 triumph over Oregon State on Friday evening.
Bostic excelled by converting 15 of her 18 field goal attempts and successfully making her only free throw of the night. Her efforts, combined with eight rebounds, helped the Illini improve their season record to 5-0, capping off a perfect five-game homestand to start the season. Cook also had an outstanding game, hitting 8 of 13 shots that included two 3-pointers, in addition to dishing out eight assists, marking the 33rd occasion in her career that she has netted at least 20 points.
Genesis Bryant was another key contributor for Illinois, adding 12 points and four assists to the team’s efforts.
For Oregon State, AJ Marotte led the way with 16 points. The Beavers, who reached the Elite Eight in last season’s NCAA Tournament, have now lost three consecutive games, bringing their record to 1-4. Senior Catarina Ferreira added a double-double to her stats, with 15 points and 11 rebounds, marking her second career double-double achieved in consecutive games.
Cook’s early contributions, including eight points and a couple of 3-pointers, helped Illinois establish a 21-13 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Beavers stayed competitive during the second quarter, with Ferreira’s eight points helping them narrow the gap to 40-30 at halftime.
Illinois showed great shooting efficiency, hitting 54.7% of their shots, while holding Oregon State to just 39.4%. Although the Illini struggled from beyond the arc, making only 5 of 20 attempts, they were effective at the free-throw line, converting 10 of 12 attempts. Conversely, Oregon State managed to sink 7 of their 29 attempts from three-point range and went 7 for 9 at the free-throw line.
Looking ahead, Illinois will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, next week to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore in the Music City Classic. Meanwhile, Oregon State is set to head to Nassau, Bahamas, for the Baha Mar Women’s Championship, where they will compete against No. 2 Connecticut in their opening match on Monday.
